Mauquoy’s history

The company was born when Maarten Mauquoy established an engraving workshop in Antwerp in 1875. Soon, his two sons joined the company: Hubert and Alphonse Mauquoy. The company’s development forced them to relocate from Hopland to Sint-Jacobsmarkt in Antwerp. Hubert Mauquoy died during the Second World War; Alphonse Mauquoy may have been an experienced sculptor, but he was not an engraver and certainly not a usinessman. Hence the entry of Edmond Tramaux in the company, a Parisian engraver who did have the necessary commercial mindset. After Alphonse Mauquoy’s death in 1954, Mr. Alfred Jansen joined the company in 1957, initially as an administrative assistant, but he soon became involved in the technical aspects.

Edmond Tramaux died in 1958 and, together with Mrs. Tramaux and her daughter, Alfred Jansen continued the company until becoming the sole owner in 1962.

After various relocations in the Antwerp area, the Grobbendonk building was ultimately purchased in 1972. With the help of his three sons Michel, Chris and Jan the company evolved into the most sophisticated manufacturer of medals in Belgium, with a state-of-the-art engraving workshop.

In 1992 Alfred Jansen left the Mauquoy-Tramaux company, while the three sons succeeded in continuing the company’s growth. Three new companies were founded in 1996, each having their own specific nature: Mauquoy Medal Company, Mauquoy Engraving Company and Mauquoy Token Company. The name of the Mauquoy-Tramaux company was changed into Mauquoy Trading Company.

In 2000 Chris and Jan Jansen were solely involved in the Mauquoy Token Company and relocated it to Olen. At that time their younger brother, Peter Jansen, who initially still sold Mauquoy's products in the Antwerp shop, joined the corporate group. The Monumunt Belgium company, which Peter Jansen had run together with his father Alfred from Antwerp, moved along to Grobbendonk.
